The project’s extensive scope includes the widening of nearly 5 miles of highway, the addition of two new express toll lanes, major interchange reconfigurations, and the construction of three in-line bus rapid transit (BRT) stations, along with a BRT charging yard. It will enhance connections to regional transit service at SR 522 and SR 527 interchanges.
The project also incorporates several sustainable initiatives including six new fish passages, specifically designed to improve fish migration. The construction plan strategically positions new culverts adjacent to existing ones to minimize disruption to the ecosystem.
"We're excited to celebrate the groundbreaking of the I-405/Brickyard to SR 527 Improvement Project alongside WSDOT. This project will substantially enhance the I-405 corridor, furthering both regional transportation and sustainability goals,” said James Bailey, Executive Vice President of Skanska USA Civil’s West Coast operations. "We’re not only expanding the highway and adding new transit options, but also implementing impactful environmental improvements. Our continued partnerships with WSDOT, Sound Transit, the City of Bothell, and other local stakeholders will be crucial as we undertake this complex, multifaceted improvement project to boost connectivity and reduce congestion in one of the busiest regions of Washington.”
AECOM is partnering with Skanska as the lead designer for this project.
