RENTON, WA — Kim Schofield, PE, joins the Washington Asphalt Pavement Association (WAPA) as its Technical Director. Schofield brings her wealth of experience and knowledge of pavements to WAPA after 28 years with the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). She will lead the training and education functions and will support industry interactions with federal, state, and local public works agencies, as well as the private sector, in optimizing asphalt pavement applications and construction.

Schofield began her professional career working in the WSDOT Hot-Mix Asphalt (HMA) lab, where she gained experience building and designing HMA mixtures as well as asphalt binder and emulsions testing procedures. Her expertise includes pavement design, pavement management, and life cycle cost analysis. Her duties as the State Pavement Management Engineer included Falling Weight Deflectometer testing, friction testing, and pavement distress data collection and reporting. Schofield also managed and performed research for pavements and materials, among other engineering fields.

Part of her tenure at WSDOT included managing the strategic pavement preservation program for WSDOT’s Maintenance Program, which included conducting hands-on training. She closed out her career at WSDOT as the State Pavement Engineer, responsible for designing and managing the state-owned pavement network.

“Kim brings her impressive and comprehensive knowledge of pavements to the WAPA team," said Dave Gent, P.E., WAPA’s Executive Director. “From materials research to optimized highway maintenance practices to best new pavement construction practices, Kim is recognized statewide as a subject matter expert. She has also continuously participated in pavement research projects and in regional and national task groups advancing key asphalt pavement technologies. Kim will play a principal role in continuing to advance our mission to educate owners and contractors in the critical training needed to optimize asphalt pavements at every phase of production and construction.”

Schofield holds a Bachelor of Science in engineering physics from Pacific Lutheran University as well as a Master of Science in civil engineering from the University of Washington.
